- Often detective is the lead role
- Victim is not always known to the audience

Horror...

- Young cast - often teenagers
- Violence - blood/guts
- Focus of narrative is the violence not the actual crime
- Multiple victims
- Lead victim often becomes detective
- Suburban settings
- Adults are absent or not supportive
